A health expert has emphasized the importance of a nutritious breakfast to boost energy levels, especially as the days grow shorter and darker. According to recent research, starting the day with porridge can significantly enhance morning vitality.
Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, conducted a study involving over 800 participants over two weeks.
They aimed to identify lifestyle factors that influence energy levels. The findings suggest that consuming porridge, which is rich in complex carbohydrates and low in sugar, is key to avoiding morning fatigue.
The study indicates that porridge not only helps maintain energy but also reduces the risk of diabetes due to its whole grain content. A long-term study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that individuals who consumed three servings of whole grains daily experienced smaller increases in waist size, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels compared to those who had less than half a serving.
In addition to diet, physical activity and exposure to natural light are crucial for maintaining energy throughout the day. A brief walk outside in daylight, even on cloudy days, can help reset the body’s internal clock. Horacio de la Iglesia, a biology professor at the University of Washington, explained that morning light exposure advances the body clock, making individuals feel tired earlier in the evening.
Dr. Michael Mosley, a diet and wellness expert who passed away earlier this year, highlighted the significance of sunlight for health. He noted that in the UK, vitamin D synthesis from sunlight is only effective from April to September. Therefore, it is essential to boost vitamin D levels during summer months to support health throughout winter. Low vitamin D levels in winter have been linked to various health issues, including dementia and autoimmune diseases.
Moreover, sunlight exposure enhances mood by increasing serotonin levels in the brain, helping individuals feel calm and focused. As winter approaches, incorporating porridge into breakfast routines and ensuring adequate sunlight exposure can be effective strategies for improving overall well-being and energy levels.
