TEHRAN – The 8th International Congress on Heart Failure is set to take place from November 27 to 29 at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. This significant event will gather experts and specialists from various fields, including internal medicine, cardiovascular surgery, anesthesia, and pharmacy.
Heart failure is a serious medical condition that occurs when the heart cannot pump sufficient blood and oxygen to meet the body’s needs.
Although it does not mean the heart has stopped beating, it can lead to severe health complications. Currently, there is no cure for heart failure; however, appropriate treatment can help patients lead fulfilling and productive lives.
The congress is supported by prominent organizations such as the World Heart Failure Society (WHFS), the European Heart Failure Society, and Szeged University in Hungary. Its primary goal is to introduce modern diagnostic and treatment approaches for heart failure while emphasizing preventive measures.
Common symptoms of heart failure include shortness of breath, fatigue, swollen legs, and pulmonary edema—where blood backs up into the lungs due to inefficient heart function. The prevalence of heart failure is rising, largely attributed to modern lifestyles, poor diets, and air pollution.
Delayed diagnosis can significantly increase the economic burden on individuals and healthcare systems. The congress aims to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing blood sugar levels, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, and avoiding smoking. It also encourages individuals to seek medical attention promptly if they experience any symptoms of heart failure. Additionally, the event will highlight the crucial role of nurses in managing this condition.
Alongside the congress, an exhibition showcasing pharmaceutical equipment—including diagnostic and therapeutic tools like echocardiography and angiography—will be held.
Upcoming Cardiovascular Events
In addition to this congress, Tehran will also host the 24th International Congress on Cardiovascular Updates from September 17 to 20.
Organized by the Iranian Society of Atherosclerosis, this event aims to present the latest findings in cardiology regarding diagnosis, prevention, treatment strategies, and the role of artificial intelligence in managing heart diseases. The congress is expected to attract over 5,000 participants from countries including North America, Italy, and Turkey.
The event will serve as a platform for researchers across various cardiovascular fields to network and exchange ideas. It will also showcase new pharmaceutical products and medical technologies that enhance patient recovery.
Heart Disease Statistics in Iran
Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death in Iran, accounting for 40% of annual fatalities. Kourosh Etemad, a health ministry official, noted that conditions such as car accidents, diabetes, and cancer also contribute significantly to mortality rates among non-communicable diseases.
High blood pressure, low physical activity levels, unhealthy diets, smoking, and alcohol consumption are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Health officials recommend that individuals aged 30 and older visit health centers for screenings related to high blood pressure and diabetes.
A tailored care plan will be developed for patients based on their age, family history, and weight during these visits. This program aims to facilitate early disease detection or control risk factors effectively.
Unfortunately, many people remain unaware of their high blood pressure status; only half of those diagnosed adhere to their prescribed treatments. This highlights the need for increased public awareness regarding disease management and control strategies.
