World Heart Day 2024: Theme, History, And Significance

by Amy

World Heart Day is observed annually on September 29 to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and promote heart health worldwide. This day serves as a reminder for individuals, governments, and health organizations to take proactive measures in preventing heart-related conditions, which are the leading cause of death globally. This year, we explore the theme, history, and significance of World Heart Day.

Theme

From 2024 to 2026, the campaign will focus on the theme “Use Heart for Action.” This theme encourages individuals to prioritize their heart health while empowering them to urge leaders to take cardiovascular health seriously. It provides a global platform for meaningful action and emphasizes the importance of deliberate efforts. The theme signifies a shift from merely raising awareness to empowering people with clear goals and purpose. “Action” reflects a dual approach: influencing policies and advocating for behavior changes that promote physical activity.

History

World Heart Day was established by the World Heart Federation (WHF) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1999. The first official celebration took place on September 24, 2000, highlighting the growing burden of heart disease and stroke. These conditions are often preventable through healthy lifestyle changes. Initially observed on the last Sunday of September, WHF standardized the date to September 29 in 2011 to enhance global visibility.
