10 Million Nigerians to Be Screened for Hypertension And Diabetes

by Amy

The Nigerian Health Commissioners Forum (NHCF) has initiated a project aimed at screening 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes. Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the NHCF Chairman and Health Commissioner of Ekiti State, announced the initiative in a statement on Monday.

The project, titled “Project 10 Million – Know Your Number, Control Your Number,” seeks to address the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension and diabetes, in Nigeria. Filani emphasized the need for urgent action, stating that NCDs contribute to about 27% of all annual deaths in the country.

This initiative is led by Prof. Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare. Additionally, it supports the Sector-Wide Approach compact signed with the President to improve health outcomes nationwide.

Governors’ spouses and various stakeholders will also participate in promoting this cause, amplifying efforts to achieve healthier outcomes for millions of Nigerians.

Filani outlined several objectives for the project:

Screen 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes during the campaign week.

Provide immediate counseling and referrals for individuals with concerning results.

Connect newly diagnosed patients with treatment facilities for ongoing care.

He added that the project aims to raise public awareness about hypertension and diabetes while improving data collection on NCD prevalence. This information will help inform health policies and planning across states.

“This synchronized sub-national campaign represents a critical milestone in combating NCDs in Nigeria,” Filani stated. He believes that with strong collaboration among state health leaders, this initiative will lay a solid foundation for future health interventions aimed at reducing the burden of hypertension and diabetes in the country.
