NEA Baptist Leads Arkansas in Heart Failure Treatment with New Device

by Amy

Jonesboro, AR – NEA Baptist has made history by becoming the first hospital in Arkansas to successfully implant a Cardiac Contractility Modulation (CCM) device. This innovative procedure, led by Dr. Matthew Haustein, Director of Cardiology, marks a significant milestone in the hospital’s commitment to providing cutting-edge treatments for heart failure patients.

The CCM device, known as the Optimizer system, is the only FDA-approved device of its kind in the U.S. It works by sending unique electrical impulses to the heart, enhancing its ability to contract and improving overall heart function. This therapy is designed to alleviate symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue, allowing patients to walk longer distances without needing rest.

Jimmy Cook, the first patient in Arkansas to receive the implant, underwent the procedure on January 16, 2024. Cook, who has been managing heart failure since a heart attack in 2016, credits Dr. Haustein and the new technology for his improved health. “I think he’s the reason I’m still here talking to you,” Cook said.

Dr. Haustein emphasized the benefits of the CCM device, noting that it not only improves heart function but also reduces hospitalizations for heart failure patients. “More and more studies are showing favorable data, including keeping people out of the hospital more,” he explained.

The success of this implant highlights the rapid evolution of cardiovascular technology over the past two decades. “We have so many new things available that we didn’t have before,” Dr. Haustein noted. “It’s made a big difference in our patients.”

Cook expressed enthusiasm for future medical advancements, stating, “If they’re going to experiment with me and get me better, let’s keep it going.” His willingness to embrace new treatments reflects the growing confidence in innovative therapies like the CCM device.

The Optimizer system has been extensively studied, with its effects documented in over 120 peer-reviewed articles. It offers hope for heart failure patients who may not qualify for other treatments, providing a new avenue for improved quality of life and reduced symptoms.
