Mon Health Introduces Innovative Procedure to Lower Blood Pressure

by Amy

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Mon Health recently welcomed an international team from Japan to showcase a groundbreaking procedure aimed at lowering blood pressure. The procedure, known as Renal Denervation (RDN), utilizes ultrasound waves to effectively reduce blood pressure and enhance overall health.

So far, Mon Health has treated 20 patients with the Barostim device, many of whom have a history of strokes or heart attacks. At the event, two patients shared their positive experiences with the treatment.

Developed by Recor Medical, RDN is designed to treat patients with high blood pressure. Representatives from Recor’s parent company, Otsuka Medical Devices Co., Ltd., attended the meeting to learn about Mon Health’s success with the procedure, as they aim to expand RDN’s availability in hospitals worldwide.

Dr. Bradford Warden, Chief of Cardiology at Mon Health, explained how RDN functions. He noted that the liver releases hormones that regulate blood pressure. During the procedure, a transmitter is placed in the artery leading to the kidney.

This transmitter emits ultrasound waves that stimulate the nerves around the artery, preventing the liver from releasing hormones that raise blood pressure. Dr. Warden mentioned that this procedure can lower blood pressure by as much as 20 millimeters of mercury, a significant and sustained reduction compared to oral medications, which can lead to fluctuations if doses are missed.

Dr. Wissam Gharib, an Interventional Cardiologist at Mon Health, credited the collaboration between Mon Health and Recor for making RDN available locally. Mon Health System President and CEO David Goldbert emphasized the importance of providing advanced care within West Virginia, stating, “This is a great example where our doctors identified a device, found an opportunity, and partnered with us.”

While the procedure is now offered at Mon Health, it is still relatively new, meaning that insurance coverage may not fully extend to it yet.

Understanding Renal Denervation

Renal Denervation is a minimally invasive procedure that targets the renal nerves to help control high blood pressure.

Traditional treatments for hypertension often include lifestyle changes and medications, but these can sometimes lead to side effects that patients find difficult to manage.

The RDN procedure involves applying ultrasound energy to the renal arteries, which can lead to a significant drop in blood pressure. This innovative approach represents a promising alternative for patients who struggle to control their hypertension through conventional means.

Conclusion

Mon Health’s introduction of the Renal Denervation procedure marks a significant advancement in the treatment of high blood pressure. With positive outcomes reported by patients and the support of international medical representatives, this innovative therapy has the potential to improve the lives of many individuals suffering from hypertension in West Virginia and beyond. As the medical community continues to explore and validate this procedure, it may pave the way for broader acceptance and insurance coverage in the future.
